How do I read and send email through my virtual domain?

General Notes

You may have multiple email boxes in a virtual domain. Each email box has a separate email address (for example, joe@mydomain.com), and a separate password for retrieving email from the box.

You can use any email software that understands the pop3 protocol to pick up email from your virtual domain. This includes Netscape, Internet Explorer, Eudora, pine, emacs, and practically every other email program in the universe!

If you've asked us to forward email destined for a particular email box to another location, such as your account at your dial-up provider, you should contact the support department there for instructions on picking up your email.

You may request aliases for an email box. An alias is just an additional email address that is also delivered to an email box. When you are configuring your email software, use the original account name and password (not one of the alias names).

Our email servers are specially configured to prevent unauthorized use by relayers. This means that you'll need to use the smtp or outgoing mail server of your dial-up provider (ISP).

Configuring Your Email Software

Here's the information that you'll need to configure your email software correctly.
Item Example
Your email address john_q_public@yourdomain.com
Your mail server user name. This is the part of your email address before the at-sign. john_q_public
The incoming (pop3) mail server, where you pick up your email. pop.yourdomainname.com
The outgoing (smtp) mail server, the server that sends your outgoing email. This is the mail server at your dial-up provider (ISP). Ask the support department at your ISP for this information. mail.yourisp.com

When you retrieve your email, you'll be prompted to enter your password. Remember to enter your password exactly - usually our passwords are all lower case unless you've requested something different.

Example - Configuring Netscape Email

Select the Edit->Preferences menu. In the Preferences window that appears,
  • Open the Mail & Groups category.

  • Select Identity
    Item Example
    Enter Your name john_q_public
    Enter Email address john_q_public@yourdomain.com
Enter Reply-to address (same as your email address) john_q_public@yourdomain.com
Enter Organization and Signature File if you like.

  • Select Mail Server
    Item Example
Enter Mail server user name john_q_public
Enter Outgoing mail (SMTP) server (ask your dial-up ISP) mail.yourisp.com
    Enter Incoming mail server pop.yourdomainname.com
Select the POP3 radio button, if it's not already selected.

  • Click the OK button at the bottom of the window.

  • You're ready to send and receive email!
